Optimal selection of individuals for repeated covariate measurements in follow-up studies

2016

Repeated covariate measurements bring important information on the time-varying risk factors in long epidemiological follow-up studies. However, due to budget limitations, it may be possible to carry out the repeated measurements only for a subset of the cohort. We study cost-efficient alternatives for the simple random sampling in the selection of the individuals to be remeasured. The proposed selection criteria are based on forms of the D-optimality. The selection methods are compared with the simulation studies and illustrated with the data from the East–West study carried out in Finland from 1959 to 1999. The results indicate that cost savings can be achieved if the selection is focuse…

A Search for Sleptons and Gauginos in Z0 Decays

1990

Using a data sample corresponding to 10 000 hadronic Z0 decays, we have searched for the production of sleptons and gauginos in the two-prong decays of Z0. No candidate remains after straightforward selections. For neutralinos, we use selection methods developed in our previous search for neutral Higgs particles. The negative results are translated into improved mass limits and parameter constraints on the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.

Combination of metabolism measurement and a time-lapse system provides an embryo selection method based on oxygen uptake and chronology of cytokinesi…

2016

Objective To evaluate correlations between oxygen consumption (OC) measurements before and after embryo cytokinesis, observing OC during embryo cleavages and combining that information with morphokinetics to relate to implantation potential. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting University-affiliated private IVF unit. Patient(s) A total of 1,150 injected oocytes in 86 first oocyte donation cycles with embryo transfer on day 3. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measurement(s) We analyzed the embryo OC and combined this data with the cytokinesis event, exact timing (in hours) of blastomeric cleavages, with the use of an incubator equipped with time-lapse videography, gathering a total of …

Is morphokinetic analysis the answer?

2013

Abstract Efforts aimed at improving pregnancy rates have focused on the search for additional markers of viability to supplement current criteria for embryo selection. Time-lapse technology represents a powerful tool in assisted reproduction for evaluating embryos dynamically. Whilst standard methods of embryo assessment are based on subjective morphology evaluation at discrete time points, thereby limiting the information produced for embryo selection, time-lapse recording introduces several additional morphokinetic parameters for embryo evaluation. This additional information can improve implantation rates and reproductive outcomes. This review surveys available knowledge on time-lapse im…

Frequency Range Selection Method for Vibrational Spectra

2018

Theoretical calculations of vibrational properties are widely used to explain and predict experimental spectra. However, with standard quantum chemical methods all molecular motions are considered, which is rather time-consuming for large molecules. Because typically only a specific spectral region is of experimental interest, we propose here an efficient method that allows calculation of only a selected frequency interval. After a computationally cheap low-level estimate of the molecular motions, the computational time is proportional to the number of normal modes needed to describe this frequency range. Results for a medium-sized molecule show a reduction in computational time of up to 1 …
